Kevo strict nature reserve – autum hike

15.9.2025

Experience the entire Kevo Canyon Valley on multiday hike!

We hike from Sulaoja to Kenesjärvi on a five-day hike. The challenge and scenery of the route vary from fell highlands to rocky slopes, a ridge formation running across lakes and quiet fell birch groves.

On the hike, you will get to know Luomusharju, the courtyard of the Ruktajärvi wilderness hut, the Kevo canyon landscapes, the Fiellu waterfall and a kammi, the delicate fell nature and the surroundings of the Kevojoki river. The autumn leaves are in full glory during the hike and during the darkening evenings you can even see the northern lights.

The hike is suitable for those who have previously hiked with a backpack. Due to the steep climbs, staircases and rockiness, it is good for the hiker to take into account the demanding nature of the route. A person with basic fitness can handle the hike. Ask for more information about the route profile if necessary! We will proceed at a leisurely pace and take lots of photo, rest, and snack breaks.

Program: (schedule to be confirmed)

Day 1. Sulaoja – Ruktajärvi 11km

We meet at the Sulaoja parking lot and walk along the eastern side of the nature trail over Luomusharju to the yard of the Ruktajärvi wilderness hut. The trail is easy to walk and we will take a lunch break along the way.

Day 2. Ruktajärvi – Suohppasaja 11km

The next morning, the journey continues through the fell plateau to the Suohppasaja lavvu, where we will set up camp. In the evening, we will visit and enjoy dinner at the canyon viewpoint. The terrain is gently rising and rocky.

Day 3. Suohppasaja – Roajasjärvi 15 km

On the third day, we will hike to the Fiellu waterfall and its nearby gorge. Lunch will be eaten at the waterfall campsite and the journey will continue later to the sheltered campsite of Roajasjärvi. The path is partly difficult to navigate due to rocks and roots, and the day trip includes stairs and climbs, as well as one river crossing.

Day 4. Roajasjärvi – Beachelojavrit 13km

The journey continues on flat terrain along the Kevojoki River to the Gamajotnsuohppasaja lavvu for a lunch break, from where we continue along the fell plateau to the scenery of the Njaggaleapme gorge lake. We cross the river three times and the terrain becomes rocky before the last river crossing and campsite.

Day 5. Kenesjärvi 9 km

On the last day, we walk through a pine forest on rising terrain to the Kenesjärvi parking area, where a ride will pick us up back to Karigasniemi to the starting point. On the last day, after the initial climb, the terrain becomes easier.

A ride back to Sulaoja from Kenesjärvi will be arranged. The cost (~245€) of the ride will be shared among the participants and the schedule will be agreed in a common WhatsApp group. 4 participants from Utsjoki can get to Sulaoja on my ride on the day of departure.
